In another troubling development during a season that has gone off track, the San Francisco Giants can no longer count on the durability of their most reliable pitcher. The team placed Logan Webb on the 15-day injured list with bursitis in his right knee, ending a streak of 156 consecutive starts without a missed turn—a testament to his endurance since emerging as the surprise ace of a 107-win club in 2021. Since 2022, Webb has logged 868 innings, the most of any major league pitcher.

Something has clearly been off with Webb this season, however. Through eight starts, he owns a 5.06 ERA, his walk rate has increased, and his velocity has dipped slightly. In Tuesday’s outing against the San Diego Padres, Webb departed after just 62 pitches over four innings, having allowed six runs—a rare early exit for him.

Getting Webb to leave after four innings was difficult enough. Convincing him to go on the IL for the first time since 2021 required nearly everything short of a tranquilizer dart. “I haven’t missed a start in a long time,” Webb said. “It’s been eating at me a little bit. But I think it’s best for me, best for the team, for the longevity of my career. I’ve got a lot of good people in my corner who talked me into it, pretty much. Glad I did.”

Webb noted that he had been dealing with the knee issue for a while, and it worsened on April 30 in Philadelphia when he sprinted to cover first base and stepped hard on the bag. He acknowledged that the injury to his push-off leg limited his ability to finish pitches against the Padres. “Definitely watch and see some pitches where I usually don’t throw them,” Webb said. “I’m missing up and glove side. It’s not an excuse. Still got to be better. So good for me, good for the team. Rest and reset and then help out the way I’m supposed to help out.”

Webb would not confirm receiving a cortisone injection. “But it’s already feeling better,” he said. “So I’ll give you that.”

The Giants recalled right-hander Trevor McDonald from Triple-A Sacramento. He is expected to take Webb’s spot in the rotation for the upcoming series at Dodger Stadium, which starts Monday.
