However, the Merengues have only lifted five titles domestically, while Barcelona have endured a decade-long drought without a European or intercontinental triumph.

In Spanish competitions, Barcelona remain the most successful club in the Copa del Rey (32 titles) and the Spanish Super Cup (16). Yet they continue to chase Real Madrid in La Liga, where the Merengues still hold a lead—though it has shrunk significantly this century. Real Madrid are the most decorated La Liga champions with 36 titles, followed by Barcelona’s 29 after this season’s victory. As of 2002/03, Madrid led by 12 titles, but that gap has now narrowed to just seven, highlighting Barcelona’s resurgence domestically and their stronghold in the first half of this decade.
