The Swedish national team’s squad announcement for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America has sparked outrage from former international John Guidetti, according to Swedish newspaper Expressen.
Guidetti, 34, who played as a striker for clubs such as Celta Vigo and represented Sweden at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, is now a football pundit. He criticized head coach Graham Potter, 50, who is originally from England, for his selection decisions.
“This is a cowardly selection. Your job is to pick the best squad,” Guidetti said, taking aim at the manager. He was particularly unhappy with the omission of 20-year-old rising star Roony Bardghji, who recently won the league title with Barcelona. “Look at his quality and performance. I don’t understand it,” Guidetti added, expressing his bewilderment.
Potter, who previously managed Chelsea, has experience handling star-studded teams. Guidetti questioned the manager’s approach, saying, “Potter struggled with player management at Chelsea, where he had many top stars. Is he trying to leave out big names? I don’t know.”
