Tracey Ivey-Muhammad admitted she had reservations when her son, Jared Ivey, decided to transfer to Ole Miss. The state of Mississippi carried its own fears for her. However, her experience in Oxford proved far different, which is why she later pushed back against Lane Kiffin’s description of the area.
Appearing on the Talk of Champions podcast, Tracey wanted to set the record straight after Kiffin’s interview. She honestly acknowledged her early doubts about moving to the South before explaining how welcoming the community truly was.
“My experience with Ole Miss. So when Jared decided to go on the portal, Ole Miss was the front runner. He says, ‘I’m going to Ole Miss.’ Did I have concerns? It was Mississippi. Of course, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t, it was the South,” she said. “We’ve lived in the South. I’ve had a great experience at Ole Miss. Everybody was lovely.”
Her words carry weight because she did not hide her initial fear. Once her son arrived in Oxford, she found the place far kinder than the image many outsiders hold. For Tracey, Oxford left a lasting positive mark on her family. That is why she did not see Kiffin’s remarks as a fair reflection of the town her son came to know.
Beyond defending Oxford’s culture, she also highlighted Kiffin’s lack of personal engagement with families. She revealed that during Jared’s entire three-year career at Ole Miss, Kiffin spoke to her only once. She argued that if Kiffin struggled to connect with families or close big recruiting deals, it likely had more to do with his own communication failures than with the town itself.
For Tracey, the real issue was not geography but the distance between a head coach and a player’s family. In college football, she explained, parents remember who calls, who checks in, and who makes them feel valued during a life-changing decision. She noted that if a head coach cannot even build a basic relationship with the family of one of his top defensive stars, blaming the town’s location when recruits choose elsewhere is deeply hypocritical.
She also clarified how her son ended up transferring from Georgia Tech to Ole Miss. Tracey credited assistant coaches—specifically defensive line coach Randall Joyner and Kiffin’s own brother, defensive analyst Chris Kiffin—as the real reasons Jared wore the Rebels jersey. She emphasized that it was those assistants, who put in the long hours, that drove his recruitment.
Her point is not that Mississippi has no history. It is that one family’s lived experience in Oxford did not match the fear they initially felt. That real experience gives her pushback far more weight than a simple online reaction.
